1945’de İngiltere’de doğan Eric Patrick Clapton, 13 yaşında akustik gitarla tanıştı. Bir süre Londra’da sokak çalgıcılığı yaptıktan sonra, 17 yaşındayken ilk grubu “The Roosters”a katıldı. Aynı sene blues grubu “The Yardbirds”e katılan sanatçı, değişik gitar tekniğiyle ön plana çıkmayı başardı. Müzikal olarak Buddy Guy, Freddie King ve B.B. King’den etkilenen Clapton, grubu The Yardbirds’le Crawdaddy Club’da ilk ciddi performansını verdi. Amerikalı blues müzisyeni Sonny Boy Williamson ile beraber İngiltere turnesine katılan grup, 1963 senesinde “Five Live Yards” adındaki albümü çıkardı.

Mart 1965’de The Yardbirds’den ayrılan Clapton, bu grupla en son Ağustos 1965 tarihinde çıkan “For Your Love” albümünde çalıştı. Eric Clapton’ın gitarlarıyla, albümden çıkan single “For Your Love”, İngiltere listelerinde 6 numara olurken, Clapton aynı senenin Nisan ayında “John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers” grubuna dahil oldu. Bu grupla 1966 tarihli “Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton” albümüne imza atan sanatçı, 1960 Gibson Les Paul gitarı ve Marshall amfisiyle bir çok blues dinleyicisinin hayranlığını kazandı.

1966 senesinin ortalarında “John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers” grubundan ayrılan Eric Clapton, aynı sene Jack Bruce ve Ginger Baker ile efsanevi “Cream” grubunu oluşturdu. Windsor Caz ve Blues Festivali’ne katılan üçlü, sahnedeki performanslarıyla herkesi kendilerine hayran bıraktı.

1966 yılında Cream ile beraber “Fresh Cream” albümüne, 1967 senesinde ise “Disraeli Gears” albümünü piyasaya süren üçlü, bu albümden çıkan “Sunshine Of Your Love” ile listelerde 5 numara oldu. Cream, 1969 senesinde 3. albüm “Wheels Of Fire”ı piyasaya sürdü, albüm İngiltere listelerinde 3 numara oldu. Amerika listelerinde 1 numara olmayı başaran albümden çıkan “White Room” da büyük beğeni topladı. Aynı sene 4. albüm “Goodbye”ı piyasaya çıkartan Cream, Amerika listelerinde 1 numara olurken, İngiltere listelerinde de 2 numara oldular. Cream’in son orijinal albümü olan “Goodbye”dan sonra Jack Bruce ile Ginger Baker arasında başlayan gerilim grubun dağılmasına sebep oldu.

1969 senesinde “Blind Faith” grubunu oluşturan Eric Clapton, bu grupla Kasım ayında “Blind Faith” albümüne imza attı. Blind Faith, bir yıl aktif müzik yaptıktan sonra dağıldı ve Clapton, Amerikalı grup “Delaney and Bonnie and Friends” grubuyla turnelere katılmaya başladı. 1970 yılına kadar bu grupla çalışan sanatçı, Delaney Barnett ile yakınlaşarak söz yazma yeteneğini geliştirdi.

1970 yılında ilk solo albümü “Eric Clapton”ı çıkartan Eric Clapton, aynı sene Derek & The Dominos grubuyla “Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs” albümünde yer aldı. Albümde bulunan “Layla” şarkısını The Beatles’dan arkadaşı George Harrison’un eşi Patti Boyd-Harrison’a ithaf eden Clapton, aynı zamanda The Allman Brothers Band’den Duane Allman ile bu albüm sayesinde tanıştı.

Derek & The Dominos’un Amerika turnesi sırasında Duane Allman’ın motorsiklet kazasında ölmesi, Eric Clapton’ı iyi giden kariyerinde kaotik bir şekilde etkilerken, sanatçı 1971 senesinde uyuşturucu bağımlılığı yüzünden tedavi görmeye başladı. 1973 yılında The Who’dan Pete Townshend’in Clapton’a destek amaçlı Rainbow Konseri’ni gerçekleştirmesi ve bu konserin albümünün çıkması ile 1975 filmi “The Who” grubunu anlatan “Tommy”de, Clapton’ın “The Preacher” parçasında yer alması sanatçıyı hayata döndürdü. Uyuşturucu bağımlılığından kurtulan ancak ağır bir şekilde alkol tüketmeye başlayan Eric Clapton, 1974 yılında oluşturduğu grupla 2. solo albümü “461 Ocean Boulevard”ı piyasaya sürdü. Albüm içindeki Bob Marley parçası “I Shot The Sheriff” ile beğeni toplarken, grup 1975 yılında “E.C. Was Here” adındaki canlı konser albümünü yayınladı. Aynı sene aynı kadroyla “There’s One In Every Crowd” albümünü çıkartan Eric Clapton, 1976 yılında “No Reason To Cry” albümünü çıkarttı.

Eric Clapton, 1977 senesinde “Slowhand” albümünü piyasaya sürerken, albümdeki “Wonderful Tonight” parçasını Patti Boyd-Harrison’dan esinlenerek yazdı. 1979 senesinde Patti Boyd-Harrison ile evlenen sanatçı, aynı senelerde “Rock Against Facism” akımının önemli temsilcilerinden biri haline geldi. Bu fikrini 1980 senesinde siyahi müzisyenlerden oluşturduğu yeni grubuyla destekleyen Clapton, 1981 yılında prodüktör Martin Lewis aracılığıyla “The Secret Policeman’s Other Ball” şovuna katılarak, burada Jeff Beck ile beraber sahne aldı.

1984 yılında “Pink Floyd” üyesi Roger Waters’ın solo albümü “The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking”da yer alan Eric Clapton, 1985 senesinde “Behind The Sun” albümünü piyasaya sürdü. Albümün prodüktörleri arasında Phil Collins de yer alırken, aynı sene Patti Boyd-Harrison ile evli olmasına rağmen Yvonne Khan Kelly’den bir kızı olan Clapton, kızı Ruth’un varlığını birkaç sene gizli tutmayı tercih etti. 1986 yılının Ağustos ayında ise İtalyan model Lory Del Santo’dan bir oğlu olan Clapton, oğlu Connor’ın doğumunu bir sonraki albümünde müjdeleyecekti.

1986 yılında oğlu Connor’a ithafen “August” albümünü çıkartan Eric Clapton, “Tearing Us Apart” parçasında sanatçıya Tina Turner eşlik etti. Albüm Clapton’ın İngiltere’de en çok satan albümü olma özelliğini taşırken, albümdeki “It’s In The Way That You Use It” parçası 1986 filmi “The Color Of Money”nin soundtrack’inde yer aldı. 1987 senesinde “The Cream Of Clapton” derleme albümünü çıkartan sanatçı, 1988 senesindeyse “Crossroads” derleme albümünü piyasaya sürdü.

1989 senesinde “Journeyman” albümüyle sevenleriyle buluşan Eric Clapton, aynı sene eşi Patti Boyd-Harrison’dan boşandı. 1990 senesinde kendisiyle turnede olan Steve Ray Vaughan’ın helikopter kazasında ölmesi ve 1991 senesinde oğlu Connor’ın apartmanın balkonundan aşağı düşerek hayatını kaybetmesiyle derinden sarsılan sanatçı, 1992 senesinde MTV’de gerçekleştirdiği “Unplugged” konserini albümleştirdi ve bu albümden “Tears In Heaven” parçasını oğlu Connor’a ithafen yazdı. Bu albüm ile Grammy’lerden “Yılın En iyi Albümü” ve “En iyi Erkek Vokalist” ödüllerini alan Clapton, aynı sene Sting ile beraber “It’s Probably Me” parçasını hazırladı.

1994 senesinde çıkarttığı “From The Cradle” albümünde eski blues şarkılarını baştan yorumlayan Eric Clapton, bu albüm ile Amerika listelerinde 1 numara oldu, 3 kez de platin plak aldı. 1996 senesinde “Crossroads 2: Live in the Seventies” derleme albümünü çıkartan Clapton, aynı sene “Change The World” single’ı ile 1997 Grammy’lerinden “Yılın En iyi Parçası” ödülünü kazandı.

1998 senesinde Climie Fisher ile ortak çalıştığı “Pilgrim” albümünü yayınlayan Eric Clapton, 1999 senesinde hayranlarının karşısına derleme albüm “The Blues” ile çıktı. Aynı sene bir başka derleme albüm “Clapton Chronicles: The Best of Eric Clapton”ı piyasaya süren Clapton, yine aynı sene Melia McEnery ile hayatını birleştirdi.

2000 yılında B.B. King ile çalışarak “Riding With The King” albümünü piyasa süren Eric Clapton, 2001 yılına girildiğinde “Reptile” albümü ile sevenleriyle buluştu ve ardından 2002 yılında “One More Car, One More Rider” adlı konser albümünü yayınladı.

2004 yılında ünlü blues müzisyeni Robert Johnson’a ithafen “Me and Mr. Johnson” albümünü çıkarttı

2005 yılında eski grubu Cream ile beraber Royal Albert Hall’da sahneye çıkan Eric Clapton, bu konseri “Cream – Royal Albert Hall London May 2-3-5-6 2005” albümüyle dinleyicilerine ulaştırdı. Aynı sene Ağustos ayında “Back Home” albümünde yeni şarkılara yer veren sanatçı, 2006’nın sonlarına doğru J.J. Cale ile beraber çalıştığı “The Road To Escondido” albümünü piyasaya sürdü.

Solo ve çalıştığı gruplarla çıkardığı 34 albüm ve sayısı bilinmeyen katkılarının olduğu diğer çalışmalar... Teknik olarak kendini çok iyi bulmayan Clapton, esas önemli olanın duygu olduğunu savunuyor. Blues sololarında ilk ve en büyük etkilenimleri Freddie King ve B.B King iken, dobro tekniğinde ise en çok Duane Allman’dan etkilenmiştir. Wah wah pedalı, Cream zamanında çok kullanılmakla beraber son zamanlarda pek görülmemiştir. Gitar ayarı ise her zaman sabit 1/8’dir. Efsanevi gitarist "Blackie"yi üç Fender Staratocester’ı birleştirerek elde etmiştir. 1989’lara kaddar esas gitarı olan "Blackie" o yıl emekliye ayrılmış, yerini "Eric Clapton Serisi" adı altında çıkarılan yeni bir Stratocaster almıştır. Les Paul ve Gibson diğer sevdiği gitar türleri olmasına karşın Clapton adı, Stratocaster ismiyle özdeşleşmiştir.

1980’lerden bu yana İngiltere’nin Royal Albert Hall konser salonunda klasikleşmiş konserler veren Clapton’u dinleme şansına sahip olanlar, hayatta en sevdiği işi yapan bir adamla karşılaştılar; müzik yapan bir adamla... Yaşadığı acıları, mutlulukları, aşkları, uyuşturucuyu, alkolü, armonileri ve rifleriyle bizlere anlatan ve çoktan evrenselliği yakalamış bir adamla... O, Eric Clapton...
